Abstract:

From the moment a person is born, they experience, make sense of their environment, and find a place in their memory through the emotional bond they establish with the space. The space associated with memories, experiences, perceptions, attitudes and behaviors is coded in the memory. These codes can remain in the long-term memory by being given meaning both spatially and socially, especially in childhood, which is the initial phase of the individuals life process. This study, which mainly investigates the relationship between space and memory through the houses lived in during childhood, focuses on how and to what extent the house lived in during childhood is defined and coded in the mind in terms of spatial and social aspects. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with people aged 50 and over n60 who lived in different geographies of our country and in different time periods about their childhood homes. In the study, a qualitative process was followed in which descriptive analysis was carried out in line with the participants statements with data collection methods such as literature research, interview, note-taking, photographic detection, recording of the interview and document analysis. As a result of the findings obtained; memory is not only an individual phenomenon but also a reflection of the social life in the mind of the individual. It is determined that social interactions such as games, visits, and holidays play an important role in remembering places. Happyjoyful or sad events, attitudes and behaviors experienced in places affect the duration of the places retention in memory. The study reveals that the spatial richness of local architecture that has a place in memories should be transferred to current housing designs against the danger of loss.
