Abstract:

In Islamic sciences, the source of knowledge is an extremely important issue, and therewithal, it is a legal issue with earthly and otherworldly consequences. Todays plagiarism studies reveal that this issue still maintains its importance. This situation is essentially a requirement of respect for the efforts put in by scientists. When it comes to the interpretation of the Qurān, expressing who the information belongs to is one of the issues that have been emphasized sensitively for a long time. When we look at the hadith, fiqh, kalam and Islamic history works along with the first tafsīr sources, it is seen that commentators, muhaddis, jurists, mutakallimūn and historians gave special importance to this subject and recorded the information in their works together with its documentsanad. In fact, in the early periods, interpretations based on personal opinions were not tolerated, and for this reason, the works of the first commentators generally consisted of narrations from companions and followers. Although it became a tradition to convey information with a documentsanad in the early second century after Hijrah, Muqātil b. Sulaymān did not indicate the source of the information he mostly used in his commentary. On the other hand, in the tafsīr of Mujāhid b. Jabr compiled by his students, the information was given together with its documentsanad using hadiths and the opinions of the companions. In this study, the works of Mujāhid b. Jabr and Muqātil b. Sulaymāns works will be discussed in terms of sources, specifically Tabarī.
