Abstract:

ABSTRACT Viktoriya Tokareva, one of the strongest names of the short story genre and known for writing Chekhov-style stories, is one of the important writers of twentieth century Russian literature. The author, who, like her predecessor Chekhov, deals with ordinary, everyday subjects in her works, but harbours deep meanings in these subjects, differs from her contemporaries by clearly conveying the society she lives in through stories that seem insignificant. Tokareva, who is also among the contemporary Russian women writers, reflects the problems specific to Russia in the modernisation period and the solution of these problems from her own point of view, allowing her to take a strong stance in womens prose. The common point of many of the works of the author, who conveys the daily life in her stories written in a humorous language, is related to the fact that she continues her search for what is the phenomenon of happiness, which has been discussed since the existence of mankind, and reflects this in her works. The phenomenon of happiness, on the other hand, has been discussed in many fields of social sciences depending on the internal or external factors in a persons life, and disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, religion and literature have maintained their place at the focal point of this discussion. In our study, the definition of happiness, the answer to which is sought in Russian writer Viktoriya Tokarevas The Happiest Day, is evaluated through the perspectives of many ancient thinkers on happiness and these views are analysed in the context of the characters in the story. Keywords: Russian literature, Soviet literature, Happiness, Tokareva, Chekhov.
