Abstract:

Praise and pride were the most important genres in classical Arabic poetry, in both genres the description of the poet tended mainly to the moral side, while the physical side was almost negligible. The same goes for the satirical poem, in which the poets were keen to point out physical flaws and ridicule the handicaps suffered by the adversary.
Contrary to this doctrine, some poets have helped to change the image that circulates around people with disabilities, and we can divide these poets into two categories: poets who themselves suffered from defects and disabilities and normal poets. The current study will seek to trace some of the poetic lines in which the two groups mentioned exaggerated physical impairment, in order to analyze them and build on the ways in which they attempted to defend this impairment. In this regard, we will limit ourselves to three shortcomings: leprosy, blindness and leprosy.
