Abstract:

In the history of Turkish-Islamic Literature, it is a tradition that religious subjects were written in verse due to practical and pedagogical reasons such as ease of memorization and long lasting in the mind. On the other hand, it is seen that a foreign language text written on branches of science such as hadıth, kalam, fiqh, sufism, qiraᵓat and tajwıd especially taught in Ottoman madrasas, was translated into verse for various reasons. Due to factors such as the writing style, form and content of the source text in a foreign language - especially prose works in a foreign language - translators who translate into Turkish in verse may face some difficulties in technical aspects such as verse form, prosody and rhyme. This brings along some savings or initiative of the translator about the source text, such as subtracting, expanding, introducing or postponing words phrases during the transfer of verse. Although this is the case, it is also noticed that the relevant interventions or the issues of taking initiative are often not mentioned in translations. In this context, works such as al-ᶜAwamil al-miᵓe, in which the basic topics of the grammar of Arabic, which is considered a religious science, are processed in a concise manner, are among the works translated into Turkish in a verse manner with the source text in a foreign language. Regarding such works, it has been determined that for the time being, only verse translations have been made to the al-ᶜAwamil of ᶜAbd al-Qahir Jurjanı d. 471 1078-79 and Birgivı d. 9811573. This study is the subject of to create a literature on the verse translations of al-Jurjānīs al-Awāmīl, which is one of the basic grammar books of Arabic, which is considered a religious science in itself as well as mediating the teaching of religious sciences, and which is taught - even memorized - in Ottoman madrasas, and about which there are not many studies, to introduce these translations and to make general evaluations on the methods of translations. The aim of the study is to reveal in the conceptual framework and in the light of theoretical information about verse translations how an auxiliary source for teaching Arabic is translated in verse in Turkish Literature and what kind of interventions translators have had to make to the source text during the translation. It is thought that the study will contribute to the clarification of the literature of verse translations of foreign language works written for religious sciences and the place and function of verse poetry in the Ottoman language education system.
