Abstract:

Located in a strategic position in the northern Adriatic Sea, Dalmatia has held great significance throughout history due to its control over trade routes and maritime dominance. To secure its naval supremacy, Venice launched a series of military campaigns to control the regions key harbors and settlements. Under Doge Pietro Orseolo II 9911008, Venice rose to prominence in the Adriatic, forming an alliance with the Byzantine Empire in 992 that granted Venetian ships reduced tolls and preferential passage. However, after the Kingdom of Hungary annexed Croatia in the early 12th century, it emerged as Venices chief rival, aiming to control Dalmatia as a crucial transit route. In 1117, Hungary dealt Venice a significant blow with a victory at the Battle of Zadar. The situation was further complicated by Dalmatias status as a Byzantine territory, which drew the Byzantine Empire into the conflict. After the Fourth Crusade 1204, Venice used its powerful navy to seize control of Dalmatias islands and coastal cities. Despite the conflicts with Hungarians, Venice ultimately secured and maintained its dominance in the region for centuries.
