Abstract:

The article first discusses the architect of the Anatolian Enlightenment movement Atatürks thoughts on modernization in the context of his saying that The truest guide in life is science, and then examines the contributions of poet, politician and thinker Hasan-Âli Yücel, one of the leading advocates of the Enlightenment movement, to the cultural background of Republican Turkey in the context of his own works. Stating that the foundation of the Republic is to be science and therefore it is necessary to follow the development of science day by day, Atatürk ensured the establishment of the discipline of Science History as a Republican project. Later, the article points how the first Turkish historian of science, Aydın Sayılı, who was sent to Harvard University to study Science History with Atatürks directives, was directed to study and how he later founded the first Science History department. Similarly, it was emphasized then, that for the modernization movement to succeed, the individuals of the young Republic needed to be well educated, and the opening of educational institutions with programs prepared according to scientific methods and the duties of teachers were foundational. The article details Hasan-Ali Yücels view of the Republic and states that he defined the Republic as the new life and that he saw himself as one of the advocates of the new life. The article then, after pointing that he was committed to the Turkish Enlightenment program based on the Renaissance and Enlightenment movements, explicates Yücels views on what should be done in the fields of education, science and culture for the modernization of the country to continue uninterruptedly. Yücel saw what needed to be done as a two-stage process. He identifies that necessary institutional steps and the construction of these institutions would enable the realization of Turkeys modernization. He also details his views on what needed to be done in order to prevent a potential interruption of the modernization movement that the young Republic was trying to realize with its limited means. For this purpose, the article takes care to examine Yücels designs based on his various public speeches, and his efforts to carry out education especially with modern methods. Likewise, the article emphasizes his role in the foundation of the Village Institutes and his breakthroughs in the field of translation. In addition to these, the article argues that Yücel was also an administrator, intellectual and thinker who was well versed in the modes and principles of the Renaissance and Enlightenment movements.
