Abstract:

Morocco, Senegal, Mali, and other African countries are the chronotope of Marc Gontard's Fractales (2017) and La Morsure (2021). In these novels, European and African characters evolve through violence inherited from colonialism, perpetuated by post-colonialism, and fueled by fundamentalism and machismo. But within this imported violence, the exotic gaze, in the sense given to the term by Victor Segalen, points to the rays of light that are friendship, sisterhood, brotherhood, and universal love, which give reason to hope for a return to the greatness, altruism, and generosity of the human heart. Fractales and La Morsure are novels about the formation of the citizen of the world. Their author, Marc Gontard, is inspired by friendship between peoples. He embodies this in his life as well as in his work.
