Abstract:

Locating in the Yörüklü village of the Sungurlu district of Çorum province, the contruction of Ergülü Baba Mosque is based on the first quarter of the 16th century. However, the structure, which lost its congregation first and then the religious officer due to its location far from the settlements, was abandoned to its former fate when a new officer failed to be appointed. From the charter records, it was understood that the structure was built with the intent of working as a zawiyah by Ergülü Baba. The structure continued to be used as a zawiyah until as late as 1845, when it functioned as a center for Friday and Eid prayers. In addition to keeping this tradition alive in the identity of Ergülü Baba, it requires that the building be taken under holistic conservation with its shrine, burial ground and fountain. The preservation of these structures, which are tangible cultural heritages, will also contribute to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage values, which are still kept alive in the memory of the region. By carrying the memory value to the present physically, the identity perception created by the settlement has been carried to the present day, albeit by decreasing. Our study suggests data on how to preserve the vitality of this perception only with a holistic conservation and how it needs to be done.
