Abstract:

While Turkey struggles with inflation and unemployment on the one hand, it also pursues policies aimed at reducing foreign trade deficits. In order to eliminate foreign trade deficits in Turkey, a partially closed import substitution policy was followed in the 1960-1980 period, and an open and export-oriented industrialization policy was followed after 1980. The aim of the study is to reveal the effects of the industrialization strategies implemented after 1960 in Turkey on foreign trade by using the comparative analysis method. In the study, data on foreign trade for the years 1960-2019 were taken from the database of the Turkish Statistical Institute TUIK. Although the industrialization strategies implemented in Turkey made a great contribution to the elimination of the foreign trade deficit, they were not sufficient to maintain the foreign trade balance. In order to permanently eliminate the foreign trade deficit in the Turkish economy, structural policies should be developed to increase the production of goods with high added value.
