Abstract:

This study explores the role of the title in Emirati novels as a crucial textual threshold that offers initial insight into the narrative. It examines the evolution of titles through two main phases: the traditional phase, marked by clarity and directness, and the experimental phase, characterized by ambiguity, symbolism, and semantic deviation. The study raises questions about the nature of titles in Emirati fiction, their relationship to the narrative content, and their shift from conventional forms to more experimental expressions. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the research analyzes a selection of Emirati novel titles and applies a semiotic approach based on Gérard Genette’s classification (referential, descriptive, suggestive, and seductive functions). The findings reveal a clear progression of titles from being merely descriptive tools to interpretive and estranging elements, reflecting authors' growing awareness of the title's artistic function within the narrative structure.
