Abstract:

With the improvement of travel conditions in the 19th century, the works of painters, travelers and writers who traveled to the East are important in terms of shedding light on the social life of women in Ottoman society. When we look at the works of the Orientalist painting movement that was influential in this period, the image of the Eastern woman, shaped according to the supply and demand issue of the West, is widespread in the paintings about Eastern women. Among the Orientalist painters, the works of Giovanni Brindesi, who lived in Istanbul for many years and was well-versed in the social and cultural codes of the society and whose paintings have great parallels with the sources of the period, are important for our study. Giovanni Brindesi, a painter who lived in Istanbul, has eight paintings containing promenade scenes in which he sees the Eastern woman as a part of daily life. The promenade scenes reveal the difference between Italian Orientalist painters and other Orientalist painters, both opening a window to the social life of that period and making observations about the area of women outside. promenade areas, where foreign painters and writers had the opportunity to observe and transfer what they saw to their works, emerged as the most preferred entertainment areas by Eastern women. Promenade such as Kağıthane and Göksu in particular were very important in this period in terms of being places where women could be seen in public spaces. Although there were other painters who depicted the promenade theme other than Brindesi, the realistic reflections of the female image in promenade scenes that were handled through the eyes of foreigners living in Istanbul will be examined.
