Abstract:

While Pope II. Urbanus was inviting the people of Europe to a major Crusade (1095) to save the Holy Land and help their devout brothers in the East, the Muslim World was experiencing the difficulties of the struggle for supremacy between the Sunni Seljuks and the Shiite Fatimids. As the armies of The First Crusade took action on Islamic lands, Jerusalem under the rule of Artuqids was under the siege of the Fatimids (1098). While the Seljuks forces and local Turkmen principalities were trying to stop the huge Crusader armies, the Fatimid Caliph was trying to establish friendly relations with them through their ambassadors, and the Fatimids did not realise the Crusader danger in time and realised too late that they would not give up until they took Jerusalem. Accordingly, the Fatimids could not prevent the capture of Bayt al-Maqdis and the realisation of one of the most brutal massacres in world history (1099). After Jerusalem was conquered by the Crusaders, Fatimid forces repeatedly faced the Crusaders in order to reclaim Bayt al-Maqdis and protect their country, but they could not gain superiority over them (1099-1105). In conclusion, the only success of the Fatimids who had left Jerusalem to their fate, was in being able to momentarily stop the Crusaders in front of Ascalon.

Papa II. Urbanus kutsal toprakları kurtarmak ve Doğu’daki din kardeşlerine yardım etmek amacıyla “Tanrı adına savaş” sözleriyle Avrupa halklarını büyük bir Haçlı Seferi’ne çağırırken (1095), İslâm dünyası Sünnî Selçuklular ile Şiî Fâtımîler arasındaki üstünlük mücadelesinin sıkıntılarını yaşıyordu. Birinci Haçlı Seferi ordularının Avrupa’dan İslâm coğrafyası üzerine harekete geçtikleri esnada, Artukoğlullarının hâkimiyetindeki Beytülmakdis, Fâtımîlerin kuşatması altındaydı (1098). Selçuklu kuvvetleri ve yerel Türkmen beylikleri devasa Haçlı ordularını durdurmaya çalışırken, Fâtımî halifesi elçileri aracılığıyla onlarla dostane ilişkiler kurmaya çalışıyordu. Haçlı tehlikesini zamanında idrak edemeyen ve onların Kudüs’ten vazgeçmeyeceklerini çok geç anlayan Fâtımîler, Kudüs’ün zapt edilmesine ve burada dünya tarihinin gördüğü en vahşi katliamlardan birinin gerçekleştirilmesine engel olamadılar (1099). Kudüs’ün Haçlıların eline geçmesinden sonra, Fâtımî kuvvetleri Kudüs’ü geri almak ve ülkelerini korumak amacıyla Haçlılarla defalarca karşı karşıya geldilerse de onlara karşı bir üstünlük elde edemediler (1099-1105). Sonuçta Kudüs’ü kaderine terk etmek zorunda kalan Fâtımîlerin, yegâne başarıları Haçlıları Askalân önlerinde bir süre durdurabilmek oldu.
