Abstract:

The research aimes to examine the impact of one of the most severe and influential natural disasters, the desert locust plague, which affected the lands of the Zliten Mutasarrifate. It investigates the first sightings of locust swarms in the region during that period, the areas of infestation, the nature of the infected lands and their eggs, and the government’s regulations and instructions to combat the locusts. It also explores the process of appointing and assigning officials to participate in control efforts, their roles and responsibilities, the powers granted to them, and the extent of strictness or leniency in implementing the issued orders and instructions. The study highlights the methods the government used to organize control efforts, the funds allocated to these activities, and the extent of the damage caused to crops, agricultural fields, livestock, and the threat posed to human health.
