Abstract:

Non-Muslim communities consisting of Greek, Bulgarian, Jewish, Armenian and other nations lived under the auspices of the Ottoman State. Non-Muslim; It is the name given to communities that live under the rule of states governed by the Islamic principle and have another religious belief. In the early period of the Ottoman Empire, various rights were given to non-Muslim communities, but religious and so on. Restrictions have been imposed on the construction of buildings. With the decrees announced in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, non-Muslim communities were equated with Muslims in terms of citizenship rights and duties, and the prohibitions and restrictions applied to non-Muslim people were lifted. As a result of this development, many buildings that can be considered as examples of health, religious, industrial and civil architecture were built by non-Muslim communities in the 20th century.Located within the borders of the Ottoman Empire and known as Kırkkilise; Having an important place in terms of its strategic and geopolitical location, Kırklareli has hosted communities with different beliefs for centuries. This difference brought richness to the city in terms of architectural works. In this study, which deals with the works of non-Muslims in the Central District of Kırklareli, especially the residential buildings were examined. With the evaluation of the information and documents obtained as a result of the researches, many examples of religious, industrial and civil architecture belonging to the non-Muslim people were found. In this study, a selection was made among the houses with civil architectural structures and information about these structures was given by focusing on the Old Governor's Mansion, Doctor Kerameas's Mansion and Doctor Celepoğlu's Mansion. It is thought that this study can be a starting point for future researches on this subject by identifying and documenting the unique characteristics of the non-Muslim residences of Kırklareli.
