Abstract:

The origins of the image of the woman, one of the main themes of the Pre-Raphaelite group, and the group’s contacts with the texts, were investigated in the light of findings. Accordingly, the idea of the Pre-Raphaelite group, which has an important place in nineteenth century English painting, that post-Raphaelite art is degenerated and the principle that it is necessary to return to Medieval mysticism constitute the scope of the study. In this context, The painters of the Pre-Raphaelite group have depicted their own principles and propositions by examining social events through female identity. The female character, which we often encounter in her works, which often include poetry and literary texts, is the noble, virtuous woman who is the theme of the thirteenth century sonnet style poem Dolce Stil Nuovo, and the angelic woman who acts as a bridge between poet and god. The PreRaphaelite group has been used as a criticism of the angelic woman theme, which they support with poetry in their paintings, against the female identity that is humiliated in Victorian society for reasons such as sexuality and prostitution profession. The Pre-Raphaelite movement, which points to women’s problems and carries it to the present day with its artistic features, reminds us of the universality of art by reminding a short-foot attempt to go back to oblivion.
