Abstract:

After the end of World War II, the French revived their nuclear project, which had been halted due to the war, relying on French scientists and benefiting from the expertise of their allies. The declared goal was to produce energy using nuclear fuel. However, with the escalation of political events, the intensification of international competition between the United States and the Soviet Union, and France facing threats following the Suez Crisis, Charles de Gaulle, upon assuming the presidency of the Fifth Republic, issued an order to build several nuclear reactors to advance research for developing a nuclear bomb. These tests were conducted in Algeria, resulting in environmental disasters that impacted water, soil, and living organisms, causing significant damage and transforming vast areas of the desert into restricted zones.
