Abstract:

Unnatural narratives can be defined as texts that violate mimetic conventions by providing irrational or strikingly impossible events. Such narratives are not only unrealistic but also antirealistic. Although most of the postmodern fictions that have been included in world literature for half a century today appear as unnatural narratives, this classification also includes the pre-postmodern literature. In Western literature, most of Aristophanes plays, many texts by Jonathan Swift, and works such as Alice in Wonderland are prominent examples of this classification. Abdülhak Hâmid, one of the most important names of Turkish literature, determined the line of innovation in Turkish literature with his poems and plays. Abdülhak Hâmid produced only theatrical works based on the narrative. As is known, the compatibility of the theaters with the stage in terms of technique is problematic. However, some of his theaters have strikingly unnatural narrative features. The unnatural narrative quality is striking in theaters such as İçli Kız, Sabr u Sebat and Finten. In this study, Abdülhak Hâmids theaters are discussed in terms of mimetic, anti-mimetic, realistic and unrealistic aspects and so on.
