Abstract:

Postcolonialism is a theoretical framework that deals with the analysis of cultural, social, and political dynamics in the post-colonial period. This approach, especially in the field of art, examines in depth issues such as the construction of identities, problems of representation, and power relations, and investigates the role of art in social transformation. In the context of postcolonial critique, art enables the visibility of different identities, experiences, and social realities. In this regard, postcolonial art contributes to the reconstruction of cultural identities and the strengthening of social criticism. Art challenges the Wests stereotypical representations of the East and other cultures, emphasizing the dynamic and constantly changing structure of different cultural identities. Artists, while questioning their own cultural heritage and historical realities in their works, stand against the hegemonic discourses of the West and offer alternative perspectives. These works draw attention to social justice, inequality, and the traumas experienced by societies in the postcolonial era. Postcolonial art enables individuals to reconstruct their identities and to question the future by confronting the past. The main aim of this article is to understand the role of postcolonial art in social transformation through the works of Yinka Shonibare. In the research, both visual analysis and content review methods were used. In this study, identity, culture, and power relations were addressed through a literature review and visual analysis of the artists works. The findings show that the symbols and themes used in Shonibares works offer a critical narrative against Western colonial discourses and include a call to confront the past.
