Abstract:

Abstract: This article discusses the diversity of criteria for hisab and rukyat in determining the beginning of the month of Qomariyah by various Islamic community organizations (CSOs) in Indonesia, such as Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Persis, Al-Irsyad, and LDII. Differences in methods and interpretations of verses and hadiths about the new moon are the main cause of the polemic over the determination of the beginning of the months of Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dzulhijjah. Despite the differences, the government through the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) plays the role of the sole authority that issues fatwas and unifies various criteria through the Imkan Rukyat approach. MUI Fatwa No. 2 of 2004 was used as a national reference in determining the beginning of the month of Qomariyah by combining the approach of hisab and rukyat. This article emphasizes the importance of coordination between CSOs and the government in order to realize a uniform national Islamic calendar in Indonesia. Keywords: Hisab, Rukyat, Hilal, CSOs.
