 This study investigates the extent to which integrating digital humanities (DH) into postgraduate research training may enhance the performance of traditional university structures. This study also aims to highlight whether such integration can transform universities into smart, adaptive and data-driven academic ecosystems. It argues that the integration of DH into postgraduate research should take into account appropriate pedagogical design and suitable implementation strategies. This careful integration may serve as a critical turning point in the evolution of smart institutions. Undoubtedly, the role of computational tools, AI-assisted analysis, collaborative digital platforms, and learning analytics plays in research-led universities cannot be understated. They have reshaped teaching, learning, and research. Insofar as research is concerned, DH has changed how research is conducted, taught, and supervised. This is particularly relevant to some fields that have often been perceived as resistant to digital transformation, such as Arabic and Islamic studies. Based on a case study for the use of DH in teaching research methods to postgraduate students in Arabic and Islamic studies, this study concludes that integrating DH may enable humanities departments worldwide to transition into smart academic units. Responsible integration is likely to foster graduates' digital literacy and enhance their research productivity.
