Abstract:

This abstract examines the drivers of technological innovation and evolving R&D management practices in the period preceding 2020. The late 2010s were characterized by the transformative force of Industry 4.0, integrating cyber-physical systems, IoT, big data, and AI into production and operations. This shift was propelled by demands for greater efficiency, flexibility, and customization in response to globalization and intense competition. Key enablers included reductions in technology costs (e.g., sensors, cloud computing), lowering barriers for SMEs, and supportive government policies (e.g., Germany's "Industrie 4.0", China's "Made in China 2025") that provided funding, frameworks, and infrastructure. Concurrently, rising customer expectations for faster, smarter, and personalized products pressured firms toward advanced, data-driven techniques. Technological convergence (e.g., AI with robotics) further amplified innovation potential, creating new business models and value chains.
Effective R&D process management was central to leveraging these drivers. Organizations balanced structure and creativity using models like the Stage-Gate system for phased development and risk control, particularly in capital-intensive sectors. Complementing this, Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) enabled rapid iteration, especially in software development. Knowledge management systems became essential for capturing and sharing expertise across distributed teams. Integrating customer feedback early (e.g., via design thinking) reduced market risk, while strategic technology roadmapping aligned emerging technologies with future needs. Firms also managed the critical trade-off between exploratory (radical) and exploitative (incremental) innovation, requiring organizational "ambidexterity." The era saw increased use of digital R&D tools (simulation, digital twins, analytics) to accelerate cycles and a shift toward open R&D ecosystems.
