Abstract:

The natural vegetation cover of the Rif Mountains is closely linked to human activities and represents an essential resource for local populations. Its natural fragility, combined with anthropogenic pressures, disrupts its environmental balance and threatens its sustainability, making in-depth study necessary. This study aims to analyze the evolution of vegetation cover dynamics in the southern central Rif region by adopting a descriptive diachronic approach, supported by remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS). To assess spatial changes that occurred between 1986 and 2016, aerial photographs from 1986 were interpreted and analyzed, then compared to the state of vegetation cover in 2016, derived from the classification and interpretation of satellite imagery. The results reveal that the vegetation cover in the Oued Aoulai watershed experienced a significant decline during this period, mainly due to the various forms of land use by the local population.
