Abstract:

This article aims to examine the creative output of the American artist William Wegman, known for his photography and video works, which he produces through the creative relationship he establishes with his dogs, within the context of art, popular culture, and consumer aesthetics. When Wegmans works are evaluated within the framework of visual analysis and art history, it is understood that conceptual experiments were prominent in his early video and photography works, and following his adoption of the dog Man Ray, works that reinterpreted the human-animal relationship emerged. In this context, the article examines the works Wegman produced through his collaboration with his dogs using the concepts of aura and exhibition value and analyzes the position of his art by evaluating his relationship with the market through critiques of post-art. Based on the analyses conducted, it is concluded that Wegmans art reveals a hybrid structure by combining the strategies of Conceptual Art with the aesthetics and commercial logic of Pop Art. Additionally, the ethical approach adopted by the artist in using his dogs bodies as a medium of representation is also discussed in terms of why his works become easily-loved popular images rather than creating a disturbing inquiry. In conclusion, it is considered that Wegmans practice constitutes an example of an era in which the boundaries between art and life, originality and serial production, and criticality and entertainment have dissolved.
