Abstract:

In this study, the working conditions of bus drivers working in urban municipal transport services, by which a large part of passenger transport is carried out every day in Turkey, were examined in terms of occupational health and safety and the level of knowledge of bus drivers about fire and fire safety that may occur in buses was tried to be determined. In this context, a questionnaire on occupational health and safety and fire safety was applied to bus drivers who transport passengers in the municipal city bus operation. 24 of bus drivers stated that they had experienced a bus fire. It was stated that no one died in bus fires but there were cases of injuries. 33.3 of the drivers stated that they responded to the fires that occurred on the bus and that they first intervened in them with a fire extinguisher. In addition, 76 of the drivers reported that they checked the fire extinguishers on the buses. The fires mostly started in the engine compartment, electrical parts and wheel wells of the buses. It was found that the buses that caught fire were running on diesel fuel and half of the buses were 15 years old or older. It was also found that half of the buses that caught fire were not periodically maintained. In order to reduce fire risks in buses, buses must be insulated and maintained according to the A.I.T.M and UNECE regulations. All drivers must receive the relevant trainings in full.
