Abstract:

This book covers an immensely important subject, namely the divine attributes that are mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. It also explains that the belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamaa’ah is to affirm the divine names and attributes that Allah and His Messenger r have affirmed without denying (ta’ateel) any of them, distorting (tahreef) their meanings, designating modality (takyeef) to them, or likening them (tamtheel) to those of His creation.
This book also seeks to clarify the errors and contradictions of the Ash’arite methodology as it relates to Allah’s attributes. The Ash’arite affirm some divine attributes, such as the seven eternal attributes, but negate others, such as the attributes pertinent to Allah’s actions (e.g. istiwaa) and essence (e.g. His Face and Hands).
It should be noted that this book is an abridged version of the book Manhaj wa Dirasaat li Ayaat al-Asmaa Wa al-Sifaat by Sheikh Muhammad al-Amin al-Shanqiti. The author removed the philosophical terms used by al-Shanqiti in refutation of the Ash’arites.
My critical editing of the book is based on a manuscript, which I annotated where necessary, bearing the handwriting of the author. I also wrote a preface to the book clarifying its importance and its academic value, in addition to a brief biography of the author.
