Abstract:

This study endeavors to make a comparison between consumption and its associated factors in the Saudi community in the slow change period extending from 1351H to 1395 H, in which the family used to produce all its consumptions. In this stage, the women and child have had a role in the production process particularly in the rural and Bedouin areas. Also, the need and scarcity of resources were the main factors behind rationalizing of consumption and getting maximum benefit from products and commodities. After that, the rapid change period started in 1395 H where oil prices have doubled, income increased, facilities and services improved, travel abroad increased and they were overwhelmed by different types of media. This period also witnessed increase in numbers of foreign workers and the factors affecting consumption increased including; imitation, boasting, advertisement, financial capacity, awareness and guidance, living needs of urbanization besides the installments and lending policy.
The research explains effect of each of the above mentioned factors in the consumption and presents the Islamic view in the process of consumption and rationalization.
This is an exploratory study in which the research used the historical approach to tracking this phenomenon depending on the key informants and his data on this subject besides the information available in the different media channels.
