Abstract:

This research investigates the life of Altanai, the son of Kuchum Khan, the last sovereign of the Sibir Khanate. Altanays life narrative, which spans from captivity to service in the Russian military during a conflict he was not directly involved in, is crucial for understanding the experiences of Kuchum Khans descendants. The circumstances of Altanays wives and children following his demise are significant when considering the socio-economic framework of Siberia post the fall of the Sibir Khanate. This work intends to analyze the life of Altanay comprehensively. The study utilized archival documents from the Rossiyskiy Gosudarstvennıy Arkhiv Drevnikh Aktov Russian State Archive of Antiquities, namely from funds numbers 130 and 131. These funds encompass significant information regarding the members of the Sibir Dynasty. Archival documents revealed that the Russian Tsar compensated Altanay and the other sons of Kuchum Khan, each receiving a designated portion of land revenue. This situation illustrates that the Russian state, commencing in the early 17th century, sought to secure and enhance the allegiance of Kuchum Khans descendants through a methodical program. The Russian state employed Christianity as a mechanism to reinforce allegiance and prevent a potential national movement. It is documented that two sons of Altanay were baptized. Moreover the study examined the circumstances of Altanays wives after his demise. The challenges they faced illuminate both the socio-economic conditions of the Siberian Dynastys households and the systematic policies and initiatives enacted by the Russian state.
