Abstract:

Humanity had known so many natural disasters; plagues are among the most devastating. Some literary sources, like Homers Iliad, ascribe the cause of plagues to vengeful gods. Thucydides, himself an eye witness to the plague of Athens (430 - 429 B .C.), resigns himself to simply relating the facts, without attempting to offer an explanation of how such a calamity breaks out. He tells his readers that his purpose is only to inform others of the nature of the afflicting epidemic, so that they can recognize it, should it occur again. In the sixth book of his "De Rerum Natura ", Lucretius stresses the destructiveness of natural phenomena like earthquakes and ends up with a description of the plague of Athens. Lucretius, who falls back on Thucydides's historical account of the plague, dispenses with both scientific and mythological explanations of its origin. Unlike other writers of the time, Lucretius appears to be viewing natural phenomena in a rather moral or psychological light, especially in terms of fear and desire. His narration is crucially influenced by the Epicurean doctrine that holds these two human emotions as the two principal obstacles to happiness. Lucretius work stresses the fact that natural phenomena can be ascribed to scientific causes, but that those who do not understand them are tempted to see them as manifestations of the rage of the gods, the fear of whose power dominates human lives. The study therefore investigates how Lucretius successfully provides a discerning analysis of human response in the face of great afflictions caused by natural phenomena. The study shows how Lucretius narrative repeatedly underlines the fact that such phenomena should be explained empirically, and not through myth. Lucretius' major objective is to allow his readers to realize how humanity’s twin deadly weaknesses, namely, fear and desire, always conspire to bring its own ruin.
