Abstract:

Christian states, which acted with the motto that the enemy of my enemy is my friend in the face of the Ottoman threat, did not hesitate to accept the Safavids as allies, although they belonged to the Shiite Muslim faith. Since the establishment of the Safavid State, they saw the Ottoman-Safavid conflict as the right opportunity to attack the Ottomans. The West's Iran policy started with Timur's Ankara Victory. The first contact was made when the Spanish envoy Ruy Gonzalez Clavijo first arrived in Persia in 1404. Afterwards, relations with Uzun Hasan, the leader of Akkoyunlus, were continued. With the emergence of the Safavids on the stage of history, during the reign of Shah Ismail, this time under the leadership of the Portuguese, the relations of the West with Iran increased. The existence of a Shiite state in the east was a threat to the Ottoman Empire from the very beginning. It was a state policy of the Ottomans since Bayezid II to control the population movements in their lands and prevent the artisan workforce from being taken to Iran. The Ottoman-Safavid wars, which had been going on for many years in order to eliminate the Safavids, gained such a serious dimension that they bankrupted the treasury of the two countries. Considering the economic situation, it was Shah Tahmasp who tried to prevent the destruction of his state in case of a second Çaldıran. He followed the policy of keeping his state alive by making peace with the Ottomans. Finally, while achieving this goal with the 1555 Amasya Treaty, he also made the sultan accept the existence of a Shi'ite Safavid state. Economic progress was seen in Iran with Shah Tahmasp, who pursued a peaceful, wise and fair policy in the goal of agricultural and economic development. Thanks to the peace with the Ottomans, reconstruction activities started in Iran and population growth was experienced. Therefore, Shah Tahmasp was turning his back on any attempt that would jeopardize the Ottoman-Safavid peace. But the Christian kings believed that the victory in Lepanto was a breaking point that could persuade Shah Tahmasp to join the alliance. The Christian states, consisting of Spain, the Papacy and Venice, wanted to erase the Ottomans from the stage of history by launching a simultaneous campaign, both by land and by sea, against the Ottoman Empire, which lost most of its navy in the Battle of Lepanto. Portugal was included in the Christian Alliance, which was established before the Lepanto victory. Thanks to Portuguese overseas transportation, arrival in Iran was provided via Lisbon, Goa, Hormuz. It was much safer than the land route through Ottoman lands. Dom Sebastião, King of Portugal, who dominated the trade between the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, undertook the task of sending an envoy from the sea to Shah Tahmasp on behalf of the allies, who aimed to attack the Ottoman Empire simultaneously from the west and the east with the help of the Safavids. Acting in this direction, the members of the alliance stated that they intended to bring the Safavids into an alliance against the Ottomans in the letters they sent to Shah Tahmasp together with Miguel Dabreu de Lima, the envoy of the Portuguese King Dom Sebastião. However, Shah Tahmasp did not welcome the Portuguese ambassador Dabreu de Lima very friendly and took a determined stance in maintaining peace with the Ottoman Empire. In this context, our study, which we mainly deal with according to the Spanish and Portuguese archives, is an attempt to show the impact of the Battle of Lepanto in terms of international politics on a global scale.

İnebahtı zaferi öncesinde kurulan Hıristiyan İttifak’a Portekiz dâhil oldu. Portekiz’in denizaşırı taşımacılığı sayesinde İran’a ulaşım Lizbon, Goa, Hürmüz vasıtasıyla sağlanmaktaydı.
