Abstract:

Information is the most prominent power possessed by humanity to survive and control nature. Economic theorists have defined the initial socio-economic effects of steam engines on society as Industry 1.0, internal combustion engines and the mass production model based on conveyor belts at automotive factories as Industry 2.0, and the emergence of programmable logic-processing machines as Industry 3.0. The developments experienced nowadays in the field of information and communication technologies have made the relationships between humans and machines a serious area of debate in the context of artificial intelligence, and developments depending on the collaboration between humans and machines have been referred to as Industry 4.0. While all these social transformation processes are discussed as a transition from the industrial society to the information society in the sociology literature, the inequalities between societies increase even further depending on their power to control the acquisition, storage, protection, utilization, and sharing of information. As Wallerstein emphasizes in his Modern World-System theory, advancements and knowledge accumulations in economic, political, and cultural fields occur in a direction from developed societies toward developing or underdeveloped societies. The system established by core countries makes even the opponents of this system dependent on its operation, and the transfer of advanced technology takes place from the core toward the periphery in a limited fashion and as necessary.
