Abstract:

A truly Western-style enlightenment experience has not been demonstrated in the Islamic world in the last few centuries. Contemporary Islamic thought is a period of search. In this study, contemporary Islamic thought and subsequently Nurettin Topçu and his search for solutions to underdevelopment have been tried to be discussed in the context of enlightenment. It is an important point that Nurettin Topçu presents an ethical idealism, starting from the Islamic concept, for the problems posed by contemporary Islamic thinkers. At the same time, rather than just a longing for the past, his efforts to bring a unique perspective on intellectually formed thoughts make Topçus thought different from other thinkers. His discourses regarding thought on the path to truth are quite remarkable. Because for Topçu, thought is a mover. According to him, the synthesis of concepts such as movement, will, morality and rebellion is important in the study. Although the search in contemporary Islamic thought has not come to an end, there are points where it is similar and different from the enlightenment seen in the West. Critical interpretation of religious teachings in the context of Protestantism, which emerged as a reaction to Catholic thought in the West, and Presbyterianism, which developed accordingly, is seen as the main element in the Enlightenment. This structure of the Enlightenment is similar to the criticism of the tradition in Contemporary Islamic thought. However, ignoring religion with the Enlightenment is quite inappropriate in terms of Islamic thought. Instead, it is aimed to overcome the crises we are in with the basic foundations of religion. Our study consists of three headings. In the first part, the process of Contemporary Islamic thought will be mentioned, and some points from the general situation of the Islamic world and solution proposals for its underdevelopment will be discussed. In the second part, Nurettin Topçus ideas will be discussed and his contribution to Turkish and Islamic thought will be examined. In the last chapter, the discourses of the main thinkers of the Enlightenment and the ideas put forward specifically in the discourse of Nurettin Topçu will be tried to be conveyed and the subject will be completed in the conclusion section.
