Abstract:

THE ROLES OF RELIGOUS BELIEFS AND MOTIFS IN THE MANZIKERT BATTLE The Battle of Manzikert was fought between Alparslan, Sultan of the Great Seljuq Empire, and Romanos IV Diogenes, Emperor of Byzantine Empire, in 463/1071, and resulted in victory of Alparslan. The importance of this event and short- or long-term political, social, economic, cultural and religious outcomes led many historians to turn their attention to this battle. There have been various interpretations and suggestions as to which many factors caused the defeat of Romanos. The main suggestion of this article is that religious beliefs and spritiual factors are not ordinary factors for the victory of the Great Seljuq Empire, on the contrary, that they are the most essential and important factors for this victory.
