Abstract:

The problem of evil is one of the most discussed issues in the philosophy of religion and theology. The arguments developed against the problem of evil generally refer to the issues regarding humankind, such as human freedom, after-life, and moral development. But these are only attempts to show that human suffering does not contradict the premise that God exists On the other hand, all the suffering in the universe is not limited to humans. Animals that are thought to have no free will or moral responsibility have also suffered from much earlier than human history. So why does God consent to these creatures to suffer? Could plausible explanations be given as to why God allows this suffering? In this work I will discuss the possibility of a theodicy for animal suffering. In doing so, I will start from some features of the universe and living things and claim that these features can make suffering in the universe inevitable. While doing this, I will start from some features in the universe such as consciousness, regularity, gradual development of the universe and evolution, and I will argue that these features can make suffering in the universe inevitable. As to the question of why these features that cause suffering are present in the universe, I would argue that their presence is better than their absence. Therefore, the acquisition of these good features can also make some sufferings experienced by living things in the universe understandable.
