Abstract:

Abstract:
The beginning of this year - January 2021 - marked the entry into force of the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty culminated decades-long efforts of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. However, despite its legitimate goal - to delegitimize nuclear weapons as a prelude to their final elimination - and its great international acceptance, it was boycotted and criticized by the major nuclear weapon states and their allies on the pretext that it would undermine the current international nonproliferation system framework and even claimed that it contradicts the 1968 International Non-Proliferation Treaty. This study will examine the framework of this emerging treaty and its particular direct approach to the issue of nuclear disarmament. It mainly explores - in light of the conflicting claims between its supporters and opponents - the extent of its positive or negative impact on the non-proliferation system.
Therefore, through this study, the new ban treaty will be analyzed by explaining its background and its conclusion pathway, reviewing its structure and characteristics, and then we will try to realistically assess its effectiveness as an effective measure for nuclear disarmament, by addressing its impact on non-proliferation, nuclear weapon control, disarmament and nuclear deterrence, in order to discover the Challenges hindering its Implementation. and to search for possible approaches to attract hesitant countries towards it.
Keywords: the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; Nuclear disarmament; non-proliferation; a world without nuclear weapons; the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
