Abstract:

The sanctuaries and mausoleums are funerary monuments that have aroused the most interest among society, whether it be the ruling classes or the common people. The monuments dedicated to them are as diverse as they are ostentatious and have become over time an integral part of religious complexes.
The erection of these mausoleums is also widespread in various cities and villages of Algeria, among them, the old city of Miliana, which known for its scholars and its saint patrons, who enjoyed an unprecedented respect among the community, such as Sidi Ahmed ben Youcef, the owner of the famous mausoleum dating back to the Ottoman period and which includes a mosque (djamiî), a zaouia, a hostel for the disciples and a cemetery.
The present article aims to make the personality of the saint patron, known, through his famous mausoleum, an architectural masterpiece, which encouraged us to investigate its architectural and artistic characteristics. This monument represents a material heritage that is characterized by the style that predominated during the Ottoman period. It also has preserved the originality of its architecture thanks to the interest shown by the inhabitants as well as authorities of the city in this type of architecture.
