Abstract:

Increasing pressure on poultry production brings about the search for alternative solutions to traditional protein sources. The lupin (LupinusL.) as a legume plant is a legume lupin is one of the important alternatives to this issue. However, the most important restricting factor the use of lupin in animal nutrition was its contained alkaloid and glycoside. The lupin cultivates that contained of high alkaloid were called bitter lupin. Alkaloid content of new lupin cultivars was reduced to below 0.01 % by improving and they were called sweet lupin. Varieties of sweet lupin contain 28-45% crude protein and 5-11% ether extract of dry matter. Amino acid profile is relatively balanced. However, lysine (3.73-6.41%) and methionine (0.39-1.43%) in terms of the amino acid as well as other legume seeds are poor. The content of main carbohydrate types in lupin are cellulose, hemicellulose, and β-galactans. Lupin contains approximately 40% non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), and a small amount of starch. As lupin contains very small amount of trypsin inhibitor, without the heat treatment can be used in diets for monogastric animals. The future is expected to be used more widely in animal nutrition due to lupin is the desired level of nutrient composition.
