Abstract:

Balıkesir is a deep-rooted city in terms of education with the educational institutions it has taken over from the past. In this aspect, Balıkesir had no problem in adapting to many innovations carried out in the field of education in the early days of the newly established Turkish Republic. Additionally, great developments have been experienced in the field of education in Balıkesir since 1950, during the time of the Democrat Party, and important activities have been carried out for the extension of education activities in Balıkesir. In order to make education widespread, new schools were built in the city centre, districts, and villages of Balıkesir, and there was a serious increase in the literacy rate. Since there was an increase in the number of primary, secondary, secondary vocational and technical education schools, high schools, and colleges after 1950, there was also a noticeable increase in the number of teachers and students compared to previous years. The aim of the study, which was prepared based on the information presented thus far, is to reveal the activities carried out in the field of education in Balıkesir between 1950-1960 according to the School Yearbooks and the changes that these activities brought about in the province of Balıkesir In this study, school, teacher and student data of the educational institutions in Balıkesir between 1923-1950 were examined using the school yearbooks in terms of numeric values. Thus, activities done in education in the pre-DP Democrat Party period were determined. Then, using the same yearbooks, a detailed examination was performed on the numerical data in mentioned areas in Balıkesir between the years 1950-1960. The status of education in Balıkesir during the DP period was studied based on the information obtained as a result of the examinations by using the document analysis technique. In this study, the relevant works of research and examination, mainly the School Yearbooks, were also used, and the educational developments in Balıkesir between1950-1960 were discussed comprehensively.
