Abstract:

This article aims to present a new historical reading about the Consulate of the Kingdom of Sweden in Tunisia during a pivotal period in the country's history, coinciding with the end of the civil war that brought together Hussein bin Ali and his nephew Ali Pasha (1728-1740), through a reference primarily based on preserved letters in the Swedish archives of the first Swedish consul in Tunisia, Olof Rönling, familiar with the modern Arab and foreign historical studies that took care of the consular institution as research tools in understanding and comprehending the history of consular representation in North Africa and insights into the circumstances of the establishment of the consulate.
This research comes to reveal, on the one hand, the circumstances of the establishment of the Swedish consulate in the heart of the French or European neighborhood in Tunis and the start of the construction process with the import of the materials used in that. The letters also shows the position of the Consulate in Swedish trade and navigation. On the other hand, the research investigates the consular officers and the consul's success in including his two sons into the consular service and even in its management, which means turning it into a family affair. Finally, we can discern from the documents the consul's keenness to consolidate friendship and trade relations between the province and Sweden by linking tight and close relations with the notables of the Husseini court.
