 Special education presents one of the major challenges facing school leaders in this era of comprehensive school reform. The principal’s role is pivotal in the special education process. This current study was designed to better understand male and female special education teachers’ skills related to teaching students with learning disabilities (LDs) in Saudi Arabia. Male and female principals of forty elementary schools in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were interviewed. The majority of the principals (70%) indicated that they had little or some knowledge concerning the concept of special education. The principals unanimously agreed that training was important for developing the knowledge for special education teachers to be able to teach students with LDs, and 60% of them thought classroom management skills were critical for managing a special education classroom. The principals said there was no training currently being offered to in-service teachers for working with students with disabilities in their classrooms. The study provided insights for improving programmes for special education teachers and principals.
                  تمثل التربية الخاصة واحدة من التحديات الرئيسة التي تواجه قادة المدارس في هذه الحقبة من الإصلاح المدرسي الشامل. ويعتبر دور مدير المدرسة محوريا في عملية التربية الخاصة. وقد صممت الدراسة الحالية من أجل فهم أفضل لمهارات معلمي ومعلمات التربية الخاصة فيما يتعلق بتدريس الطلاب ذوي صعوبات التعلم في المملكة العربية السعودية. وقد أجريت مقابلات مع مديري ومديرات المدارس الابتدائية في أربعين مدرسة ابتدائية بالمملكة العربية السعودية. وأشار غالبية المديرين (70%) إلى أن لديهم القليل أو بعض المعرفة بشأن مفهوم التربية الخاصة. واتفق المديرون بالإجماع على أن التدريب مهم لتطوير معرفة معلمي التربية الخاصة ليتمكنوا من تعليم الطلاب ذوي صعوبات التعلم، و60% منهم يرون أن مهارات إدارة الصف مهمة لإدارة الصف الدراسي لطلاب ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة. وقال مديرو المدارس إنه لا يوجد حاليا تدريب للمعلمين أثناء الخدمة للعمل مع الطلاب ذوي الإعاقة في فصولهم الدراسية. وقدمت الدراسة رؤى لتحسين برامج معلمي التربية الخاصة.
