Abstract:

The texts in the media play an important role in conveying the topics on the agenda at local and global levels to the society and in eliminating the social structures search for information. However, the ideological assumptions that form the ontological background of media organs cause these roles identified with the media to become dysfunctional. This organic relationship between media and ideology forms the basis of the paradoxes regarding the objectivity of the media. The words preferred in the texts that constitute the media content provide important clues about the ideological attitudes of the media organs. The fact that the preferred words lead their readers to a political stance shaped according to the ideological perspective of the media organ shows that the texts in the media are built on political discourses that create ideological domination. Political discourses allow the perceptions, attitudes and ideas of the readers regarding the relevant topic to be shaped along a manipulative axis. In addition, political discourses formed around the relationship between power and authority play an important role in determining which themes will be highlighted regarding the nature of the news. In this context, the aim of the study is to examine the prominent themes in the Palestine-Israel and Ukraine-Russia war news from the perspective of political discourse. In line with the aforementioned purpose, the Palestine-Israel and Ukraine-Russia war news in the two newspapers with the highest circulation in the USA, which has the largest economy in the world, and Germany, which has the largest economy among the the member states of the European Union, were examined using the document analysis technique using the MAXQDA 2020 program. In the examination, exploratory coding was performed based on the inductive approach, and three main themes emerged as general information on the attacks, global perspective on the attacks and human rights dimension of the attacks. As a result, it was determined that the words preferred in the news texts in the USA TODAY and BILD newspapers, which constitute the sample, carried political discourse differences based on ideological perspective.
