Abstract:

The concept of biat, whose meaning constantly changed throughout historical process, is a term that was originally used in the pre-İslamic Arab society for various reasons. This article deals with the process of alteration in the meanings of this concept. Our method will be to discuss the conceptual frame that the term was attached at the pre-İslamic era and the time of Prophet Muhammad, then we will discuss the new meanings that the term biat earned at the time of Four Caliphs and Umayyad periods, in terms of history, politics and socio-cultural conditions. Here we aim to indicate the historical trial of the term within the context of denominational differentiations. “Biat” has been one of the main terms which will be the foundation of Ahl-i Sunnah political view that will be constructed in the Muslim world later on.

Tarihsel süreçte anlam değişikliğine uğrayan biat kavramı İslam‟dan önce Arap toplumunda kullanılmıştır. Biat Hz.
