Abstract:

This study examines the image of Japan and the presentation of Japans development process to the Turkish-Islamic world as a role-model in a travelogue by Abdürreşid İbrahim, a Russian Muslim Turk, in which he included his notes on his visit to Eastern Asian countries. He emphasizes the importance of cultural capital in the development project in his conferences in Istanbul and in his articles published in various Islamist and nationalist journals, while presenting Japan as a Western-European country that has developed economically without losing its traditional characteristics. He played an important role in establishing the image of Japan in the Ottoman public opinion, inviting the Turkish-Islamic world to develop under the leadership of Japan against the imperialism of the West. Abdürreşid İbrahim, whose Islamic missionary activities in Japan were supported in line with Japans official foreign policy of imperialism towards Islamic countries at the time, believed that the Turkish and Islamic worlds salvation was possible by applying the Japanese development model. In this context, Abdürreşid İbrahim expressed his observations about Japans daily life, presenting a modern appearance like a Western European country, in his lectures to Muslims in various parts of the Ottoman Empire, especially in Istanbul, and in Europe.

Bu kapsamda İbrahim 1908 yılında başladığı doğu yolcuğuna yönelik notlarını 1910 yılında yayımladığı hacimli eseri Âlem-i İslâm ve Japonyada İslâmiyetin Yayılması isimli hacimli eserinde ortaya koyarken temel amacı kalkınma projesinde Osmanlı Devletine kültürel özelliklerini koruyarak kalkınma çerçevesini, yani Japon kalkınma modelini uygulama fırsatını sunmaktır.
