Abstract:

The concept of liberty has a complex meaning as well as width which would require to thoroughly be delved into and handled. Besides, it is possible to analyze this concept either by grounding its diversities one by one, or by analyzing how they are in organic relationship and integrate with one aother. However this would be the subject of a very detailed work and it could also carry a risk of non-placed emphasis. Therefore, while grounding a political theory concept which is multi-faceted and theorical such as liberty, analyzing the issue solely single-sided may be more useful regarding the power of the emphasis. In this study, the ideas of John Stuart Mill who was a philosopher of the liberal tradition will be examined by following a similar method, whereby the meaning of individual liberty which underpines all sorts of other liberties is analyzed in its barest form in line with Mill’s ideas and thoughts.
