Abstract:

The article deals with the resistance of the Ouled Sidi Sheikh Al-Gharaba against the French occupation between 1845 and 1883 AD, highlighting the role of Sufi orders, especially the Sheikhi order, in resisting French colonialism in southern Oran. The research focused on the resistance of Sheikh Ben Tayeb, which began in 1845 AD against the French campaign that was seeking to explore the region in preparation for its occupation.
The article reviewed the general conditions of southern Oran before and during the resistance, and explained how the Ouled Sidi Sheikh Al-Gharaba dealt with the Treaty of Lalla Maghnia (1845 AD), which classified them as subjects of Morocco, which enabled them to move freely between Algeria and Morocco and exploit some of the provisions of the treaty to their advantage, although the treaty aimed to limit their activity.
The study concluded that the sons of Sidi Sheikh Al-Gharaba succeeded in mobilizing the tribes of southern Oran against the French thanks to their spiritual status, and their resistance continued for a long time despite periods of calm and stagnation due to political developments in the region, and their leadership varied according to changing circumstances.
