Abstract:

In the second half of 19th century, “modern”, “Western” urban and architectural arrangements have formed an important breaking point for urban history in the Ottoman. With the said regulations, the state affairs carried out in the residences of the notables and kadis (Muslim judges) in the provinces were moved to new functions such as government palaces, redif (military) offices, police stations. Emphasizing the importance of the urban and architectural elements used in the reflection of the strong perception of government, which is at the center of the new, modern, Western regulations, is a situation that the studies of the period also touch upon. To carry out a study on the plan and spatial characteristics of the government palace, which is the focus-symbol of government and building a strong state in minds, constitutes the aim of this research. Within scope of work, a total of 31 (thirty-one) palaces belonging to the period of Sultan Abdülhamid II, when the most number of government palaces were built in the Ottoman Empire, that are still existing within the borders of Turkey were examined. Among the resources and opportunities supporting the research are publications on the 19th century Ottoman cities and architectural environment, archive documents, especially the Presidency Ottoman Archive documents, old photographs and on-site investigation and documentation studies.
