Abstract:

This paper is a comparative exegetic study. It aims to verify the discussion relating to the nine Explicit Signs of Prophet Moses in particular and his other Signs in general; as Moses is the most supported prophet by miraculous signs. The paper comprises three chapters. The first, introductory, entitled: the people's need for prophets, miracles of the prophets, and the concept of miraculous sign in the Holy Qur'an. The second entitled the Nine Signs of Prophet Moses, a comparative exegetic analysis. The third, entitled miraculous signs of Moses in other sources: exposition and discussion. Upon long comparison and reflection in the books of the Qur'an exegesis and other sources, I concluded that Prophet Moses was sent with two types of Signs. The first type refers to the nine Signs he was sent with to the Pharaoh and his people. These Signs, according to most scholars, were as follows: "1" the staff, "2" the white hand, "3" the famine and lack of crops, "4" the flood, "5" the locusts, "6" the lice, "7" the frogs, "8" the blood, "9" the sickness. The second type of Signs of Prophet Moses refers to those he was sent with to the Children of Israel. These are numerous as reviewed in the Qur'an and other sources, including, but not limited to, bursting water from rocks, and raising the mountain. The many differences among scholars, in the past and present time, on the nature of the nine explicit signs motivated this research. The paper therefore attempted to incorporate various opinions, study, analyze and criticize them.
