Abstract:

Modern historical studies have been concerned with what are called “buried sources”, those sources whose authors did not aim to be a source of history, in its aspects that were overlooked by the authors of direct history books, such as yearbooks and biographies, as these sources focused mainly on the political aspect and the loud, resounding events. From battles and revolutions to the royal presence and what goes on in and around it, among these buried sources are the Hisbah books, which are essentially books on jurisprudential rulings in both their theoretical and practical aspects, focusing on an important ritual of Islam, which is “the ritual of enjoining good and forbidding evil,” which has become today a source. It is indispensable for the researcher of Islamic heritage, especially that related to the social and economic aspects and urban planning. It reflects many of the historical phenomena that arise on the street and sometimes even inside homes and the conditions of the people of the Dhimmah in Muslim societies, and it focuses a lot on trade, merchants, professions, crafts and crafts, which are topics that direct sources do not allow to address. The book Tuhfat al-Nazir by Muhammad al-Aqbani has this importance and more than that, as it is the only book that has been written on this art in the Islamic Maghreb, and it exposes many social ills and shows the ways to treat them.
