Abstract:

Abstract:
This study addresses a topic that has long raised questions regarding the absence of public baths in the desert palaces of Algeria, despite the fact that these palaces are architectural symbols representing the ingenuity of traditional design and its capacity to adapt to harsh environments. The research aims to analyze the geographical, historical, and social factors that led to the absence of public baths in the urban fabric of these palaces and to provide a deeper understanding of the implications of this absence on local communities. The study reveals that the desert palaces emerged in an environment suffering from water scarcity, which made the construction of public facilities such as baths impractical within urban planning priorities. Traditional architects focused instead on securing individuals’ water needs through systems directed exclusively to houses and fields, while neglecting public facilities. Furthermore, the social structure played a pivotal role, as desert communities relied on a closed family lifestyle that minimized the need for public spaces such as baths.
