Abstract:

Aram Margossian, born in Istanbul, occupies an important place in the history of Ottoman science. In order to uncover Margossians biography, this article has examined various domestic and foreign sources for the first time in the literature and contacted the institutions with which he was in contact. Photographs of Margossian, who studied engineering at the École des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, and information about his educational life were obtained from the schools archives. Information about Margossians civil service, which saw him rise to the position of General Director of Railways in the Nafia Nezareti Ministry of Public Works in the Ottoman Empire, was obtained from the Ottoman archives and sources on the history of the railways. During the same period, detailed research was carried out on his teaching at Hendese-i Mülkiye Civilian School for Engineering, the first civil engineering school in the Ottoman Empire. As a result of a detailed reading of the texts mentioning Margossian in foreign scientific sources, it was found that, unlike other figures in the Ottoman Empire, Margossians works were cited for many years, and he was integrated into the network of mathematicians in Europe, and, in addition, he published many articles in French. In the 1920s, Margossian settled in Strobl, Austria, where he died in 1931. Information about his wife, his death certificate, and the villa where he lived has been found through the Strobl church.

Aynı dönemde, Osmanlının ilk sivil mühendislik okulu olan Hendese-i Mülkiyedeki hocalığı hakkında detaylı taramalar yapılmıştır. Yurt dışı bilimsel kaynaklarda Margosyandan bahseden metinlerin detaylı okunması neticesinde, Margosyanın Osmanlıdaki diğer figürlerden farklı olarak, çalışmalarına uzun yıllar atıf yapıldığı, Avrupadaki matematikçiler ağına entegre olduğu, ek olarak Fransızca çok sayıda makale yayımladığı saptanmıştır. 1920lerde Avusturya Strobla yerleşen Margosyan 1931 yılında burada vefat etmiştir. Strobl kilisesi aracılığıyla eşi, ölüm belgesi ve yaşadığı villa hakkında bilgilere ulaşılmıştır.
